Description

A Heart for Duns is a community-driven development trust dedicated to enhancing the lives of residents and visitors in Duns and the surrounding district. As custodians of the Volunteer Hall, they offer a vibrant hub for social, cultural, and community events, fostering connections and well-being. Their ongoing commitment to revitalising local facilities ensures a thriving, inclusive community for all.

Established in 2011, A Heart for Duns emerged from a collective effort to preserve the Volunteer Hall, a significant community asset facing potential closure due to financial challenges. A public meeting, attended by over 300 local residents, led to the formation of the trust, which successfully acquired the hall in 2018 with support from the Scottish Land Fund. Since then, the trust has undertaken numerous improvements, including installing an air-source heat pump, upgrading lighting, and enhancing the ceiling to create a more comfortable and sustainable environment.

The trust’s key activities centre around the Volunteer Hall, which serves as a versatile venue for a wide array of events and services. Regular offerings include community lunches, film screenings, a beer and food festival, choir performances, a Christmas market, and a family-friendly Hogmanay ceilidh. The hall also hosts cultural events featuring local groups such as the Duns and District Amateur Operatic Society and Duns Players, as well as touring companies like Scottish Opera and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Beneficiaries of A Heart for Duns encompass the entire community of Duns and the surrounding district. By providing a central venue for diverse activities, the trust fosters social interaction, cultural enrichment, and community cohesion. Initiatives such as the Sentry Box offer essential services, while events such as DunsPlayFest and the annual Beer & Music Weekender contribute to the area’s cultural vibrancy and economic vitality.

Governed by a dedicated board of trustees, A Heart for Duns operates as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), ensuring strong governance and strategic direction. The trust actively seeks community involvement, with opportunities for local residents to participate in events, volunteer roles, and decision-making processes. This inclusive approach empowers individuals to contribute to the trust’s mission and the ongoing development of the community.

Looking ahead, A Heart for Duns remains committed to enhancing the Volunteer Hall and expanding its offerings to meet the evolving needs of the community. Through continuous engagement and development, the trust aims to create a sustainable and inclusive environment that supports the well-being and prosperity of Duns and its residents.
