Established in 1984, the Berwickshire Marine Reserve (BMR) is Scotland’s only voluntary marine reserve, dedicated to conserving the rich biodiversity of the Berwickshire coastline. Spanning 8 kilometres along the southeast coast of Scotland, from Eyemouth to St Abbs Head, the reserve encompasses 10.3 square kilometres of coastal waters, extending out to the 50-metre depth contour.
The reserve was founded by local communities and stakeholders to protect the area’s unique marine habitats and species. Its primary objectives are to conserve and enhance the biodiversity of the coastal waters, raise awareness of the marine environment through education and research, and promote responsible recreational use alongside a sustainable fishery.
BMR is renowned for its exceptional marine life, including grey seals, bottlenose dolphins, minke whales, and vibrant kelp forests that shelter diverse marine creatures such as sea slugs and territorial fish. The reserve’s clear waters and unique mix of warm and cold water currents make it a top destination for divers and snorkelers.
Governed by a board of trustees, BMR operates as a Scottish registered charity, relying on community engagement and support to achieve its conservation goals. The reserve’s activities include marine monitoring projects, educational programs, and citizen science initiatives that involve local residents and visitors in preserving the marine environment.
Looking ahead, BMR continues to enhance its conservation efforts, ensuring a thriving marine ecosystem for future generations.
