Beyond Earlston is a registered charity dedicated to empowering young people aged 12 to 18 in the Scottish Borders. Operating within the Earlston High School catchment area, the organisation offers a variety of free and low-cost activities designed to support personal growth, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. Their inclusive approach ensures every young person has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of background or ability.
Established in 2012, Beyond Earlston has been committed to providing alternative and stimulating activities that challenge and inspire young people. We don’t have our own building and instead have an office space within Earlston High School where we can deliver small group meetings and one-on-one sessions. Through the use of our electric vehicle we offer activities across the catchment area, going to where young people are including towns and villages such as Oxton, Lauder, Newtown St Boswells, and Melrose. This approach ensures that their services are accessible to a wide range of young people in the region.
Key initiatives include the “Be Bold” holiday programme, which provides free and low-cost activities for young people to try on their doorstep. The “Be Green” project encourages youth to engage with gardening and wildlife, promoting outdoor activities that enhance mental and physical health. Additionally, the “Be Involved” programme supports young people in participating in local volunteering and community projects. Beyond Earlston also offers the “Stepping Stones” project, a partnership youth work initiative that supports young people aged 10 to 18 in the Scottish Borders, aiming to improve their emotional health and wellbeing, and life chances. This project provides focused one-to-one support, targeted small group sessions, and training and volunteering opportunities.
Through our large variety of programmes, Beyond Earlston has had a positive impact directly and indirectly on many young people by enhancing their skills, confidence, and community involvement. Our feedback has shown than many young people have increased in confidence, improved relationships with others, and a better understanding of their own mental health. We have a cosy cafe in school over lunchtimes, weekly groups and activities which can be seen on our facebook and web pages. our transitions program is delivered in all seven feeder primaries and our holiday program #be bold is open to all our members
Governance and structure are central as we are a registered charity is managed by a board of trustees composed of local individuals from a variety of backgrounds, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to what we do. This collaborative approach ensures that we remain responsive to the needs of the community and continue to provide relevant and impactful services. Beyond Earlston values the input from its volunteers, offering inductions, training, and ongoing support to those interested in working alongside young people.
Looking ahead, Beyond Earlston remains dedicated to broadening horizons of the young people who are our members, looking to continue and develop future partnerships to give more opportunities on our doorstep. Through continued support and the expansion of its programmes, we aim to further enhance the lives of young people in the Scottish Borders, ensuring they have the opportunities and support needed to succeed and contribute positively to their communities.
