Border Links Ltd is a community enterprise dedicated to fostering social and economic inclusion for adults with learning disabilities across North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. Established in January 2006 with start-up grants from DEFRA, the organisation aims to provide local opportunities that enable individuals to actively participate in their communities, gain confidence, and enjoy the full benefits of life.
In March 2006, Border Links opened its first Community Club in the Village Hall at Cornhill on Tweed, North Northumberland, collaborating with two local individuals with learning disabilities. This initiative was met with such demand that the organisation expanded to over 60 participants across sites in Cornhill, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Amble in Northumberland, and Kelso and Duns in the Scottish Borders.
Border Links offers a range of educational and leisure opportunities, with person centred activities tailored to enhance personal independence and respond to individual interests and aspirations. Sessions are delivered in small, local group contexts, fostering sustainable friendships and providing a visible and positive presence for disabled individuals within their communities.
Governance and structure are central to Border Links’ operations. As a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, the organisation is committed to its mission of supporting adults with learning disabilities. Funding is secured through individual contracts from local councils, direct payments, and personal budgets, ensuring sustainability and the ability to meet the growing demand for services.
Looking ahead, Border Links Ltd continues to expand its impact, creating more inclusive communities for all. Through ongoing support and innovative initiatives, the organisation remains dedicated to empowering individuals with learning disabilities to lead fulfilling lives and actively contribute to their communities.
