Established in 2003 by parents seeking connection and support from other families, BANG is a Scottish Borders-based charity supporting neurodivergent children, young people and adults, people with additional support needs, and their families. From its beginnings as a parent-led support group, BANG has grown into a community-based organisation providing support across different stages of people’s lives.
That sense of connection remains at the heart of BANG today. Our approach is inclusive, rights-based, neuro-affirming and strengths-based, recognising that people are experts in their own lives. We focus on creating spaces where people can be themselves, develop trusted relationships, build confidence and skills, explore their interests and feel a sense of belonging. A formal diagnosis is not required; our support is based on the person and what matters to them.
BANG provides a range of services across different ages. Branching In is our weekly youth group for young people aged 11–15, while Branching Out is our weekly youth service for young people aged 16–25. Branching Forwards is our transitions and employability programme for people aged 16+, supporting people to prepare for adulthood, develop skills and explore pathways into education, training, volunteering and employment.
Our support extends to the wider family too. Wee Branches brings children aged 0–11, siblings and families together through monthly inclusive family sessions, while Branching Together provides weekly Parent Carer Hubs where parents and carers can connect with others who understand, share experiences and access support. Together, these services enable BANG to support people and families at different points in their lives, with connection, choice and meaningful participation running throughout.
