Borders Independent Advocacy Service (BIAS) is a Scottish charity dedicated to empowering individuals in the Scottish Borders by providing independent advocacy services that promote their health and social care rights. Established in 1995 as a pilot project with support from Scottish Borders Council and the Community Care Forum, BIAS has grown to become a leading provider of advocacy services in the region.
Over the years, BIAS has expanded its services to support a diverse range of individuals, including those with mental health issues, learning disabilities, older people, and children and young people aged 5-25. The organisation offers individual, issue-based advocacy, assisting clients in understanding complex information, making informed decisions, and ensuring their voices are heard in important meetings. Additionally, BIAS provides non-instructed advocacy to adults and children, ensuring that even those who cannot express their wishes are represented.
The impact of BIAS is evident in the positive feedback from those they serve. Clients have reported feeling more confident in questioning their care, participating in processes, and having someone on their side during important meetings.
Governed by a Board of Trustees, BIAS operates as a Company Limited by Guarantee and is a registered Scottish charity. The organisation is funded by Scottish Borders Council, NHS Borders, and the Scottish Government, enabling it to continue its vital work in the community.
Looking ahead, BIAS remains committed to developing innovative projects aimed at supporting vulnerable and disempowered individuals in the Scottish Borders, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to have their voice heard and their rights safeguarded.
