Description

The Braw Lads’ Executive Council is a cherished community-focused organisation based in Galashiels, Scotland, dedicated to celebrating and preserving the town’s rich history and fostering a strong sense of community. Established in 1930, the Gathering has become an annual highlight, uniting residents and visitors alike in a vibrant display of local pride and tradition.

The origins of the Braw Lads’ Gathering trace back to the 13th and 14th centuries when townspeople would ride their boundaries to protect common lands from encroachment. The modern iteration began in June 1930, aiming to create an event where former residents could return to renew old friendships and celebrate the town’s heritage. The inaugural Gathering saw around 10,000 people in attendance, marking the start of a beloved tradition.

Central to the Gathering are the ceremonies that commemorate significant historical events in Galashiels. These include the dispersal of marauding Englishmen in 1337, the granting of Ettrick Forest lands by King James IV in 1503, and the granting of a Charter as Burgh of Barony in 1599. The festivities commence with the Declaration Night in April, followed by various events leading up to the main Gathering Day, known as Braw Lads’ Day, typically held on the Saturday nearest June 30th.

The Braw Lad and Braw Lass lead the mounted cavalcade, which has grown to include over 200 riders. The procession includes ceremonial rides to significant sites such as the Raid Stane and Abbotsford House, where the community pays respects and celebrates shared history. These events not only honour the past but also strengthen the bonds within the community, fostering a sense of belonging and unity.

The Braw Lads’ Gathering is organised by the Executive Council, comprising 24 members responsible for its planning and execution. This structure ensures that the event remains deeply rooted in local traditions while adapting to contemporary times. The Gathering continues to thrive, enriching the lives of Galashiels residents and visitors, and stands as a testament to the enduring spirit and unity of the community.

Looking ahead, the Braw Lads’ Gathering remains committed to celebrating Galashiels’ heritage and fostering community spirit, ensuring that future generations can partake in and cherish this longstanding tradition.
