Description

Duns Amateur Swimming Club (Duns ASC) is a community-focused organisation dedicated to promoting leisure, recreation, and sport through swimming in the Scottish Borders. Established in 1972, the club has a longstanding commitment to fostering aquatic skills and encouraging healthy lifestyles among local residents.

Operating from the Duns Swimming Pool, Duns ASC offers a welcoming environment for swimmers of all ages and abilities. The club is managed by a dedicated committee comprising parents and coaches, ensuring a supportive and organised structure.

Membership is open to individuals under 18 who can swim several lengths of recognised strokes and are eager to learn and improve. Prospective members are invited to experience the club through three free trial sessions. The club offers two main pathways: the Competitive Route, aimed at swimmers seeking to enhance technique and stamina for regular competitions, and the Fitness Route, designed for those interested in swimming for fitness without the pressure of competition. All members are encouraged to participate in events such as the Border League and the club’s own Duns 500 competitions.

The club’s training sessions are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings from 18:30 to 20:30, providing ample opportunity for swimmers to develop their skills and fitness.

Duns ASC has a rich history of nurturing swimmers who have competed at various levels, including regional and national competitions. The club’s ethos centres on inclusivity, aiming to produce swimmers capable of competing at all levels, from regional to national and beyond.

In April 2026, the club faced challenges due to a decline in membership, which threatened its sustainability. The committee highlighted the need for approximately 20 additional members to cover operational costs and continue offering swimming coaching to young people in Duns and the surrounding area.

Looking ahead, Duns ASC remains committed to fostering local talent and instilling a love of swimming in individuals of all ages. The club continues to strive towards its mission of promoting leisure, recreation, and sport through accessible aquatic activities, aiming to strengthen community engagement and support healthy lifestyles in the Scottish Borders.
