Community meeting with panel discussion and audience seated indoors

Local community organisations from across the Scottish Borders recently came together to connect, learn and share knowledge around community ownership. The event created a supportive and practical space for groups considering taking on a long lease or ownership of land or buildings, whether to protect a valued local asset or to unlock new opportunities for community benefit.

Bringing communities and support agencies together

Organised by Borders Community Action, the event focused on the early stages of the community ownership journey, with particular emphasis on feasibility, community engagement and funding. It brought together local organisations and key partners to explore how communities can be supported from initial ideas through to delivery.

Participants heard from a range of national and regional organisations offering guidance, advice and practical support, including:

Exploring feasibility and community engagement

Discussions highlighted the importance of understanding whether community ownership is the right option and how early feasibility work can strengthen projects. Speakers shared insights on assessing assets, developing clear community benefit and engaging meaningfully with local people to build support and shared ownership.

Funding pathways were also explored, helping groups to better understand what support is available at different stages of their journey and how to prepare strong, community-led proposals.

A space for learning, sharing and networking

Alongside presentations, the event provided valuable opportunities for peer networking. Community groups were able to share experiences, challenges and aspirations, making connections that can support collaboration and learning beyond the session.

The event reinforced the value of shared knowledge and partnership working, helping communities feel more confident and informed as they consider taking on land or buildings for community benefit.

Who the event was for

The session was open to any community organisation in the Scottish Borders considering taking on a long lease or ownership of an asset. This included groups looking to make better use of local land or buildings, as well as those seeking to safeguard much-loved community spaces under threat of closure.

What happens next

This event forms part of a wider programme of support. Further networking sessions will take place later in the year, focusing on trading and sustainability and collaborations and partnerships, continuing to support communities at different stages of their development.

Borders Community Action remains committed to helping communities across the Scottish Borders explore, develop and deliver projects that strengthen local places and create lasting community benefit.
