A new, welcoming space for connection, activity and support in Peebles

People living with dementia in Tweeddale now have access to a dedicated new community resource following the opening of the Braw Herts Meeting Centre at Cavalry Park in Peebles.

Launched by Dementia Friendly Tweeddale, a Scottish charity supporting people affected by dementia, the Braw Herts Meeting Centre provides a friendly, supportive environment for people with early to moderate dementia. The centre also welcomes carers and family members, recognising the importance of supporting the whole family.

When and where the meeting centre runs

The Braw Herts Meeting Centre operates twice a week, offering regular and reliable support.

During each session, carers or family members are welcome to stay and take part. Alternatively, this time can be used as a short period of respite, knowing their loved one is being supported in a safe and welcoming space.

Activities designed to support wellbeing

Sessions at Braw Herts focus on enjoyment, inclusion and maintaining skills and confidence. Activities are designed to be accessible and adaptable to suit each individual.

  • Brain gym activities based on Cognitive Stimulation Therapy principles
  • Gentle physical activities tailored to different abilities
  • Social time to connect, chat and build friendships

The emphasis is firmly on having fun and helping everyone feel comfortable and valued. Participants are encouraged to join in at their own pace, with support from staff and volunteers throughout the session.

A warm welcome and strong community support

A key part of what makes Braw Herts special is the atmosphere. Everyone who attends is made to feel welcome, with sessions supported by a dedicated team of staff and a number of committed volunteers.

The meeting centre is also supported by local businesses. Sainsbury’s generously provides most of the food needed each week at no cost to the charity, helping to keep the service affordable and sustainable.

Cost and what is included

The charge to attend the Braw Herts Meeting Centre is £15 per session. This includes a light lunch. There is no charge for a supportive family member or loved one who attends alongside the person with dementia.
