Andrew Mcewen, always a keen volunteer struggled to find a ‘best fit’ role after leaving his career in the military. Gravitating towards outdoors opportunities, Andrew saw himself in Natural Trust and historical site roles. Recognising ‘Once you realise just how much of the UK runs on volunteer networks, you begin to appreciate how key it is that more and more individuals volunteer their time’.

By giving his time to the Blackhill Windfarm Community Fund Andrew has gained a plethora of skills ranging from analytical research and understanding, critical thinking, self-reflection and adaptiveness.

Andrew feels he has made a difference in the local community, finding his experience ‘worthwhile and rewarding’; getting a chance to meet new people he wouldn’t have met otherwise, learning more about the people and the place he lives as well as the sense of achievement and belonging.

Andrew wants people to remember that volunteering is ‘scalable – anyone can start with contributing as little as one day or even an afternoon or morning each year to something they feel passionate for.’
